The two above planters were designed to hold small plants. There is a small pocket in the top with a drain hole. In pieces I've made since I have begun to eliminate the drain hole as there is more of a need to keep in the moisture. Below are the two Mesa Planters. These pieces were designed and planted to give the impression of the southwestern landscape of North American. The physiographic features of of exposed rocks with sparse desert vegetation the region is what I wanted to express with this style of planters. On the surface each planter has separated pockets to plant succulents and cacti. All the planting openings are connected to each other inside the planter to distribute moisture throughout and allow for root interaction. |

All of the above planters have integral coloring. Powdered concrete tint was added and mixed thoroughly with the dry sand and cement before water was added. The integrated color is embedded throughout the concrete. This is unlike stains that are applied to the surface only. It is always interesting to carve because the colored areas change as the material is scraped away. The amount and type of color used can modify the setting time for the various colors in the piece. Some areas may be getting hard while other areas are still very soft. The Cubic Open pieces used gray cement and the richer colors of the Mesa Planters used white Portland Cement, which is commonly refered to as Federal Cement. |
