Ooltewah Steps

June – November 1990 & June – August 1991
Ooltewah, TN

Until I made this large piece all previous work was small, but I had been marginally involved with large pieces during my time working for Jack B. Hastings. Most of what I learned about the process of carving wet concrete happen with this project.

The entire installation was made on site. All carving was done at night to reduce the setting time. Forms are clamped together and braced with boards and blocks. In later years the conveinience of the cordless screw driver reduced much of the clamping. Tarps were strung and adjusted regularly to prevent excessive heating of the surface during the day before the mix was poured on at sunset. The flat base layer was built up with rubble, blocks and gravel mix concrete. It was wetted before the sand mix was added screeded to a few inches thick. The tall edges were done first and then the flat areas from top to bottom.
