Wet mix goes into the form and a small bucket of sand is placed in the center for those that are going to make a planter. This makes the mix go further and creates a void which was going to be scooped out anyway. Usually the wait is about three hours and there is ample time to watch slides and get ideas about what to carve, make tools and eat lunch. The mix has set and the forms are coming off

the work is becoming defined

After a couple of hours or so the work is becoming defined. There is still considerable steady and focused carving ahead to refine the surface.

Workshop at Studio Mosaics in Oregon City OR

Workshop at Studio Mosaics in Oregon City OR July 25 – 27, 2008.

Jill was the person that started me thinking about traveling workshops a few years ago. A number of people were interested early on but in the end nobody showed. Carving in the greenhouse was wonderful and we had a great time all by ourselves. Look for Jill to have various workshops in the future.

Workshop participants and pieces at Chicago Botanic Garden

Workshop participants and pieces at Chicago Botanic Garden, Sep 12 – 14, 2008.

The day we carved it rain constantly. The next day the Garden's were closed to the public but we were allowed to come in so we could clean up and finish our pieces. When we left we had to drive through the still rising water. I look forward to a return trip to Chicago Sept. 4 – 6, 2009 for another workshop no matter what the weather. Info for this and other workshops can be found at www.chicagobotanic.org/school
Sherri Art Studio, Bell Buckle, TN

Sherri Art Studio, Bell Buckle, TN May 23 – 25

This is the group (Sherri in the green) from the second workshop at her studio. I'm looking forward to the 2009 workshop because it is such a fun time. Plus it's only a twenty five mile drive from the house through the verdant hills of rural Tennessee.

Aug 19 – 21, 2008

At Beverly's we just pulled the car out of the garage and hauled in her picnic table. There was plenty of room with four at the table and me off to the side.
